Constellation Academy of Wine

All you need to know about great wine

Thanks to Steve Smit and Tom Gore, the '08 Harvest Update Chat Session, our first ever, was a success. Here are a few nuggets:

Rob Hennigar: Is harvest happening a little earlier than normal this year? Mid-September, and it seems like there are many red vineyards being harvested. Is Cab still a ways off?
Tom Gore: Harvest is a little eariler than normal. Part of this is due to lower yeilds and part is due to the heat we had that pushed ripening along last week. In sonoma county we are done with Sauv Blanc and Semillion. We have finished Alexander Valley CH for the estate vineyards and we are starting the Russian River Chard. In sonoma we have begun to harvest the vineyard designant zin for Ravenswood. i would say overall the Sauv Blanc was harvested on time and the Chard is a little early

Cheryl Hall: How about in the rest of California? Are we seeing early harvests throughout the state?
Steve Smit: Central coast seem to be pretty much normal harvest pattern. Pinot Noir and Chardonnay are just beginning in Monterey, Paso reds are getting close In the central valley, we are well under way, finishing off whies and in the middle for reds.

Cheryl Hall: How do you weigh a cluster on the vine?
Tom Gore: We walk though the vineyard filling a bucket with clusters and we count along the way. Once we have a full bucket of clusters and we know how many there are we weight the bucket and divide the # of clusters by the weight to get a weight for each cluster.
