Late bloomers await
Swift knives, separating stems
From ripe ornaments
Harvesting grapes usually takes several months because grapes mature at different speeds; you can see the same thing in spring as different varieties come out of hibernation. These are cabernet grapes. Almost all other varieties are already harvested, but you can still see cabernet hanging on vines around Napa Valley, even in late October. The picture was taken on Zinfandel Lane in the Napa Valley on October 27, 2009.
This particular vineyard is interesting because the canopy has been pruned so all the grapes are hanging, like Christmas ornaments, below the vines. If you get down on your knees and look through the rows, you can see lines and lines of grape bunches.
So harvest is over, but I don't want to stop. Hope you have enjoyed this as much as I have. I am going to keep putting these up on Facebook and Twitter. You can follow Constellation Academy of Wine on Twitter at academyofwine.
