All you need to know about great wine

I am interested in finding out what are the current trends for riesling in the US by market (Northwest, Northeast, Southwest, Southeast, Midwest (Central), Mountain, etc). What are the differences of Riesling sales by market? Does the Northwest sell more riesling than the midwest and vice versa. Also, does point of origin for riesling matter to consumers, when they buy a riesling (Washington State vs. Mosel)?

John,
Though I have not seen any detailed statistical information for the last 24 months, Riesling sales have certainly experienced strong, even incredible growth since 2006. From 2006 to 2008 Riesling sales increased by 98% according to Nielsen retail sales data. Empirical evidence for the last 2 years indicates continued Riesling growth though perhaps at a slower rate of increase. I cannot speak to any regional strengths or weaknesses as I have not seen any detailed analysis by region. The strongest retail brands have recently added Riesling to their portfolios or added marketing focus to existing Riesling skus. Like Pinot Grigio, the origin of Riesling seems less important than quality price ratio to the average retail consumer. Wine geeks and gate keepers gravitate toward great estates from Germany, Alsace, Austria and Australia but they are also willing to consider well-made WA, CA and NZ options. Hope that helps.
